Formed in 1792, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is an international body, but why is it important, and why should you choose to work with one of its members?

Walters Rural’s principal, Ray Phillips, is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and believes there are five main reasons why people should only work as an RICS member.

Regulation: Members of the RICS are regulated. The Institution is a public regulatory body, and membership requires people to meet the highest possible standards. Only those surveyors who are members of the RICS are legally allowed to describe themselves as Chartered Surveyors.

Training: To ensure they continue to meet the high standards expected by the RICS, all members must undertake Continuous Professional Development. This training ensures members are aware of the latest legislation and best practice.

Impartiality: As part of their membership, RICS Chartered Surveyors always act in the best interests of their clients, and their guidance and advice will be right for your specific circumstances.

Professionalism: Like many professions, there are no legal requirements for surveyors to join the RICS. Those that do, though, are proud of what they do and believe in helping their clients to the best of their ability and in a professional manner.

Insurance: As well as receiving training and undertaking continuous professional development, RICS members carry professional indemnity insurance, which gives their clients complete peace of mind.

As a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Ray is part of a group of surveyors who stand out in the eyes of their peers, businesses and the public. Fellowships are only awarded to those Chartered Surveyors with considerable experience, the highest qualifications and a demonstratable commitment to the profession.
